Tugs chuggin’ in for Tugfest
PARRY SOUND - Tugboats from 18 to 136 feet long will be flocking from throughout the Great Lakes to the town dock Friday to celebrate the third annual Tugfest.
Presented by the Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce, the event kicks off Friday evening with a social at 6 p.m. and the lights parade at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.).
One of the event’s organizers, Bob Corrigan, said 21 tugs have registered, with eight of those being newcomers.
“I’m quickly running out of dock space,” said Mr. Corrigan. “Awards for first place winners in each category, as well as best-dressed tug, most impressive and most congenial captain will be presented at the social event.”
Last year funds raised from Tugfest benefited the West Parry Sound Health Centre. This year, funds will go to the Waubuno Shrine Club.
“Last year we raised $900 for the health centre, this year I expect we’ll do better. I hope to see about $2,000 for the Shrine club,” he said.
About 4,000 people came down to the Parry Sound docks last year to check out the tugs, according to organizers.
Starting at 1 p.m. Saturday is the Parade of Colours, where the decorated tugs will float through the Parry Sound bay, followed by tug races at 2 p.m.. The public can tour some of the boats from 3 to 5 p.m.
