Survivorman a catch for the Northern Pikes
PARRY SOUND – Carrying little more than the clothes on his back, Les Stroud, the Outdoor Life Network’s Survivorman, will abandon a remote, desolate location in the wilderness to adventure on over to the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts to play with the Northern Pikes.
The Northern Pikes, Canadian rockers with an edge, are going to rock the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 8 p.m.
With Survivorman the highest-rated show on the Science Channel in the U.S. and on the Outdoor Life Network in Canada – and now ranking up there on the Discovery Network – outdoor adventure, filmmaking and music have all taken off in a phenomenal way for Survivorman’s Les Stroud.
In between survival obstacles in the Costa Rican rainforest, Arctic ice floes, Georgian swamp and the high Sonora desert for Survivorman, and while producing one-hour specials for the Outdoor Life Network called Stroud... Off The Grid, Les has recently joined the Northern Pikes to record an album to be released this Spring.
"Music is where I came from. I was a professional musician out of school, studied and played the Indie scene throughout the 80’s, signed with RCA, and then left the music business and delved into outdoor adventure all over Canada,” says Les on his career. “I now have a wonderful three-way marriage… it couldn’t be more perfect for me with outdoor adventure, filmmaking and music."
Roots/blues debut CD
Les Stroud's debut CD is a collection of diverse roots/blues and traditional folk, acoustic music that reflects the uniquely northern spirit of freedom and adventure. Produced with the talented recording engineer Ian Auger, the music will take you through the traditional finger pickin' style blues with ‘Delta Snow’, capture your spirit with the incredible soulful fiddle playing of Don Reed on ‘Great Blue Sky’, put a smile on your face with ‘Blue Soul’ and carry you away with emotion on the wonderful violin, bass and cello arrangement and hauntingly inspiring lyrics of ‘Clouds’.
Les was most surprised when a random email came in from Brian Potvin of the Pikes, with compliments about the Survivorman show. The two discussed writing together, which led to the writing and producing of six new songs and time in the recording studio.
Spring release date
“The Pikes and I struck up a great friendship and as a result we are releasing an album together this spring.
“Teaming up with the Pikes gives me the outlet to go back and do the ‘performance thing’ that I love so much,” says Les. He adds energetically, "I’ve been a fan of the Pikes for years; it was an honour for me to collaborate with those guys.”
So how does Les Stroud find the time to stay grounded amid the success of his television shows? “I live in Muskoka. Why not live in Muskoka? I love the separation, the truth of the matter is I can run everything out of Muskoka,” says Les.
He said in addition that, “We are moving to 150 acres of bush acreage where we reclaimed an old farm building… we’re going to live entirely off the grid and that will be my refuge… off the grid entirely.”
The Stockey Centre is excited to have the Northern Pikes and Survivorman Les Stroud rock onto our grid next Saturday.
