PARRY SOUND – Kristen Moore and her six-and-a-half month old daughter Alexis Moore-Heitman, of Parry Sound, and mother Glenna Vowles, of Parry Sound, were among the 93 participants who participated in the local Terry Fox run Sunday morning.

“My dad passed away from cancer a few months ago,” she said. “I have had a lot of family members with cancer in the past, so I’m running it.” Fifteen volunteers helped run the 25th annual Terry Fox Run, which raised $7,625 for the fight against cancer. Ms Moore herself raised $160.

After no one stepped up to the plate last year offering to organize this year’s run, employees of local real estate company Century 21 decided to tackle it and contacted the Terry Fox Foundation.

Spokesperson Barbara Jacklin said that everyone in her office had been touched by cancer in some way, either directly or indirectly, and that they would have organized the annual event even if it wasn’t the 25th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope across Canada.

Participant Richard Kory, who has residences in both Parry Sound and Toronto, has fully recovered from a bone tumor. He has participated in all 25 Terry Fox runs. For him, the run isn't’ just about raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer, but it’s also a way to inspire people to get in shape.

Mr. Kory himself ran the Boston marathon.

“I just thought it was inspirational,” said Mr. Kory, of Terry’s Marathon of Hope.
