The Parry Sound Area Municipal Airport marked its 25th anniversary on September 18, with an open house and fly-in of visiting aircraft. One of the planes that came in for the day was a 1916 vintage Fokker DR1. The aircraft was flown in from the Great War Flying Museum in Brampton by Kees Vanberkel who took time to chat with Dave Cox, a recreational pilot from Parry Sound. The Fokker was made famous by Baron Manfred von Richthofer, the “Red Baron, during World War I. Flying the tri-plane “is cold, but ‘cool’ at the same time,” said Mr. Vanberkel. “It’s fun, but unstable, so you have to respect it. It’s a great climber, with three wings.”
